Landholders urged to treat African Boxthorn quickly

Scientific Pest and Vegetation Management say now is the ideal time for landholders to control the dangerous spread of African Boxthorn on the Darling Downs. With mild weather and plants thriving spring provides ideal conditions for effective use of herbicide.

However, spring also provides ideal growing conditions for Boxthorn across the Darling Downs which adds to the importance of stopping the dangerous spread. African Boxthorn can take over your paddock and make it extremely hard for anything to move through.

The Biosecurity Act requires landholders to control African Boxthorn on their land, so do not leave it any longer.

SPVM’s success in controlling pest weeds in pastures and bushland areas is accredited to:

  • Ten years’ industry experience.
  • 4WD vehicles equipped with motorised retractable hose reel sprayers.
  • A Weed Report system that records all herbicide mixture deployed on your land and reports this to you in real time on a base map. This map can be on your computer at completion of spraying every day. If areas have been missed we will retreat at no extra cost to you.

SPVM also offers:

  • Free quotes over the phone.
  • Control of many other pest plants by foliar spraying, boom application, basal bark spraying, stem injection and slashing.

Velvety Tree Pear a real threat

The spread of Velvety Tree Pear across the Darling Downs has progressively become a real threat for landholders unaware of the risks.

Prolific in timbered landscapes not subject to tillage such as hill-sides the plant can take over the landscape.

While common Prickly Pear is controlled by the Cactoblastis insect, one of the most successful biological control agents in Australian history, Velvety Tree Pear remains unaffected by it.

With ten years’ experience controlling Velvety Tree Pear on the Darling Downs and South-West Queensland Scientific Pest and Vegetation Management have had endless success:

  • Foliar spraying with registered herbicides.
  • Stem injection of big trees with Glyphosate.

SPVM’s success is accredited to:

  • Ten years’ experience in the control of all pest plants in pasture, bushland and industrial areas.
  • 4WD vehicles equipped with motorised retractable hose reel sprayers.
  • Quad bikes equipped with motorised sprayers.
  • A Weed Report system that records all herbicide mixture deployed on your land and reports this to you in real time on a base map. This map can be on your computer at completion of spraying every day. If areas have been missed we will retreat at no extra cost to you.

Time to start preparing for Fireweed control

Yellow daisy-like flowers lining paddocks on the eastern Darling Downs this year could be the extremely toxic Fireweed.

Fireweed can cause loss of animal production and in extreme cases death to cattle and to a lesser extent sheep and goats.

Scientific Pest and Vegetation Management are urging landholders to start planning for spraying next Autumn to help stop further spread of the plant in its winter and spring growing season. SPVM can organise selective herbicides that do not damage desirable species such as grasses and clovers.

An integrated management approach involving good pasture health and the use of herbicides is the best way to control Fireweed. SPVM have ten-years-experience in the control of pest plants using herbicides in pasture and bushland situations.

Fireweed looks very similar to native daisies and should be identified before control measures are implemented. Identification can be done by visiting www.biosecurity.qld.gov.au or contacting SPVM.

Do not risk the spread of Fireweed on your land, contact SPVM.

  • Ten years’ experience his given us extensive knowledge of herbicide weed control.
  • Our Weed Report System records every litre of mixture applied to your paddock and reports it to you on a map. This map will show exactly where the herbicide has been applied and if an area has been missed we will come back and re-treat. A map will be on your computer at the completion of the job so you know exactly where we have sprayed.
  • Our 4WD vehicles are equipped with 400-litre motorised sprayers with booms up to eight metres wide.
  • Each vehicle has a GPS guidance system that ensures coverage of the whole paddock and efficient use of herbicide, saving you money.
  • We can spray your paddock for as little as $36 per hectare including herbicide.
  • Please contact John Barker on 0420 105 115 or email jbarker @ scientificpest.com.au for a free quote or further information.
