Scientific Pest Management has provided responsive and programmed pest management services across Australia for over 40 years.

We provide both audit and compliance services to food and beverage distribution facilities and sub-contractors. Our tailored services include but not limited to:

  • Understanding the premises/storage facility design to identify entry/hiding areas of pests
  • Inspection of food and beverage transport vehicles and equipment/carts and loading docks
  • Understanding the distribution chain
  • Warehouse maintenance and exclusion practices for pest management purposes
  • Advice on good housekeeping and hygiene practices
  • Pest management inspections and monitoring
  • Physical control methods
  • Chemical control methods
  • Habitat/environment management

We do not provide the same strategy for each client – we actually understand your business, its demands, the distribution plant along with the environment and locations, client industries and businesses etc. as no distribution business is the same. We then tailor a pest management strategy around that. Also, your pest management strategy will evolve and change due to seasons along with different changes in the local environment, customers, sub-contractors and distribution routes.

Common pests faced within the Food & Beverage Distribution Industry

Common pests faced by the food and beverage industry are as follows:

Ants

Even though ants do not eat a lot of food, it doesn’t take long for ants to infiltrate your inventory and product. Once ants get into a building, they leave an invisible trail for others in their colony (hundreds or thousands of ants), to follow. Because of their strong survival instincts, ant colonies can be very difficult to control once inside your warehouse facility. Ants can contaminate large quantities of your inventory and product, therefore requiring you to discard them due to health purposes.

Beetles & Weevils

Beetles and weevils generally infest supply chains that contain cereals and grains, flour, seeds, buts, dried fruit, chocolate, spices and processed foods. They can infest plant equipment contaminate food by leaving body parts and cast skins, making food unfit for human consumption. In addition, these insects can change the physical and chemical properties of raw product ingredients, causing them to ‘cake’.

Birds

Birds generally cause physical damage on roofs of storage facilities and can also lay their nest in those areas but without being diligent, birds may appear and live inside the building. Their droppings and feathers may contaminate machinery and food inventory and there is also the risk of spreading viruses, bacteria and etc. Bird nesting can also bring about infestations of mites and fleas.

Cockroaches

Cockroach can cause hygiene and health issues by carrying disease-causing bacteria and introduce this to your food supply. Good sanitary and hygiene practices are required to help prevent infestations and issues. Cockroaches may enter from and hide in areas through door spaces, pipes, windows and junction boxes to name a few. As cockroaches are primarily nocturnal, they are generally not visible to the human eye and therefore, difficult to detect.

Drain Flies

A different specie to the common fly, there are a few flies that breed and thrive inside your drains.

Flies

Flies are one of the most common carriers of diseases in Australia. Also, flies are a common pest to the food industries.

Fuit Flies

You generally find fruit flies when fruit inventory supplies are either ripe, rotting or decaying. They may also exist during the fermentation periods in the liquor industries such as wine, beer and other alcohol processes.

Mites

Mites can generally infest stored products such as cereals, cheese, nuts, eggs, fruit and flour. They can enter packaged items made of paper, cardboard, plastic, cellophane and foil. As the entrance holes may be too small for the human eye to be seen, packaging may harbour these insects inside without being detected.

Moths

There are different types of moths but depending on each breed, moths can generally infest ingredients and dry food products that contain nuts, dried fruits, flour, cereal, oil seeds, cocoa beans and grain. In addition to making food unfit for human consumption, moths can change the physical and chemical properties of these raw product ingredients, causing them to ‘cake’.

Rats & Mice

Rats and mice can cause hygiene and health issues and generally breed and infest areas that are close to food. With the right conditions and climate, their population can explode and given that food manufacturers and processes have large amounts of food supply, they can infiltrate your food supply network.

Rodents can enter through gaps in roofs, walls and under doors. They can also enter on pallets if your supplier has a pest problem or hitch a ride on food transport carts and vehicles.

They can contaminate access routes and surface areas with urine, droppings and filth picked up from the environment. Rodents transmit diseases such as Salmonellosis, Leptospirosis and Lyme Disease. They also carry ectoparasites, like ticks and fleas, and the diseases they transmit. Rodents can also cause inventory and product and packaging damage along with equipment and machinery damage and structural damage to your premises or even tarnish your brand name.

How we deal with Pests

Our staff are highly trained to carry out an audit of your premises. They treat every premise that they visit differently and tailor a programmed pest plan to suit the environmental factors, including seasons. We use technology as our helping hand to monitor and track incidents or to make changes to your bait stations in real-time. Your account manager and technician are then alerted in real-time in order to investigate any issues just in case any issues arise in between scheduled programmed maintenances. You will then be provided with reports for your own purposes along with providing those reports to your customers.

Food Standards and Compliance

Whilst structuring your pest management strategy, we will also understand your micro-business needs which includes legal, industry and business requirements that you need to achieve. For example, our practices can meet HACCP, AQIS, FSANZ standards and Health Department regulations. We can also adapt your compliance to suit supermarkets such as (not limited to) Woolworths, Coles, IGA and Costco.
